For people with chipped, misshapen or uneven teeth, dental veneers may be their best solution for achieving a full and healthy smile. They are ultra-thin shells that cover the front surface of teeth and are custom made to fit individual mouths perfectly. Despite their thinness, they are made to be highly durable by a professional dental laboratory.
Veneers are often made from porcelain because of their close resemblance to the look and color of natural teeth. In short, a person’s smile can be completely transformed by porcelain veneers, bringing about significant improvements to teeth color, shape, and size.
One key advantage of porcelain veneers is that they are more stain resistant than other veneer options. Because of this and their durability, veneers made from porcelain often do not have to be replaced for many years, making them a convenient and economical option for many dental patients. Why Get Porcelain Veneers?
A convincing case has been made thus far about the advantages offered by porcelain veneers. With that said, there are also other reasons patients should consider:
- Help create the appearance of naturally white teeth
- Mend or fix crooked or misaligned teeth
- Correct the gap between uneven teeth
- Bring uniformity to teeth that are too small or large
- Repair teeth that are chipped or broken due to damage or decay
- Minimize dental sensitivity due to receding gums
- Offer versatility in terms of tooth color options
In some cases, patients may experience some tooth sensitivity, as the process involves removing enamel, which is the outer, visible layer of teeth. As a result, their teeth are sensitive to hot and cold food and beverages. Also, there may be situations in which tooth decay and disease has progressed to a point where installing porcelain veneers will not be a benefit. A Galleria Dental dentist will be able to determine the condition of a patient’s teeth upon their initial in-office visit.
How Does the Porcelain Veneers Procedure Work?
Typically, installing porcelain veneers can be accomplished within two appointments to the dental office. During the first office visit, the dentist will examine the patient’s teeth and determine whether getting veneers is right for them. If the dentist and patient decide to proceed with the porcelain veneer option, then the dentist will reshape the tooth surface in order to bond the veneer to it. Next, molds of the patient’s mouth and teeth are made. From there, decisions are made about the size, shape, and color so that the dental lab can make porcelain veneers tailored to those specifications.
During the second office visit, the dentist will temporarily place the dental veneer to see if it is the specified fit and color. If it is, the veneer will be permanently cemented to the tooth using a bonding cement. The dentist will then apply a special light beam to the veneer that allows to harden and set in place. After the procedure has been completed, the patient will receive special instructions for caring for the new veneers.
